Tura, June 26: The Public Works Department (Roads) today inspected the damaged portion of the Matcha Melaram road in Bajengdoba area of North Garo Hills, following complaints received from certain quarters.
Following the inspection, the contractor was instructed to carry out rectification of the affected portions by applying a fresh seal coat at the earliest and has agreed to comply with the direction.
On June 8, inspection of the road was initially carried by officials of the Bajengdoba PWD (Roads) Sub-Division along with the contractor, during which it was found that the seal coat had worn off in certain sections due to an insufficient mixture of bitumen emulsion. It was subsequently decided that the affected portions would be repaired by applying a fresh layer of seal coat.

A fresh inspection by the PWD technical team on June 26 found that the damage was confined to isolated stretches covering an approximate length of 200 metres.
Officials from the department informed that the work could not begin immediately because the repairs involve the use of cold mix bitumen, which requires dry and sunny weather for proper curing. With the monsoon continuing, the contractor has been directed to commence the repair work as soon as weather conditions become favourable.
The Sub-Divisional Officer has also been instructed to visit the site again to monitor the condition of the road and oversee the execution of the repair work.
