Guwahati, June 20: The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC) has intensified efforts to control the gas discharge from its well RDS147A in Assam, as the situation continues to draw environmental and safety concerns.
A high-level team of international well control experts from the United States is expected to arrive at the site by June 20 (Friday) evening to assist with advanced containment measures. This marks a critical phase in the operation as ONGC prepares for dynamic well killing strategies to halt the uncontrolled gas release.
ONGC engineers have carried out multiple “junk shot” operations, deploying different materials and pressure combinations to plug the well. However, the leak has yet to be fully contained, prompting the need for overseas expertise.
To ensure safety, ONGC has begun creating an alternate route to ease logistical movement around the well site, while removing bunk houses and non-essential equipment from the vicinity. Continuous water blanketing—used to suppress flammable gas—remains in place round-the-clock.
Ambient air quality monitoring has also been intensified. According to ONGC, all readings—including particulate matter and gas concentration—are currently within permissible limits. Authorities say there is no immediate threat to surrounding communities.
In coordination with the district administration, ONGC is providing assistance to families affected by the incident and has pledged ongoing support. The company said it is working closely with both national agencies and international experts to resolve the crisis with minimal risk to the environment and local population.
The exact cause of the gas discharge remains under investigation.
