USTM champions tree plantation drive and plastic-free pledge on World Environment Day

Must read

Guwahati, June 5: In response to escalating environmental challenges, the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM), launched a comprehensive initiative on World Environment Day 2025. The university organised a tree plantation drive and a plastic-free pledge campaign, emphasising that environmental stewardship is not solely the responsibility of governments or organisations but a sacred duty of every individual to foster a healthier, greener world.

This year, USTM spearheaded an engaging awareness campaign titled “Embracing a Plastic-Free Pledge for a Sustainable Environment,” aligning with the global theme “Ending Global Plastic Pollution.”

Dr. R.K. Sharma, Principal of IA Ayurvedic Medical College, addressed a rally at USTM, which saw active participation from students and faculty members. He highlighted the detrimental effects of pollution and encouraged tree-planting efforts to combat environmental degradation.

On the eve of World Environment Day, the Department of Botany organised a plantation drive titled “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” in the presence of USTM Vice Chancellor G.D. Sharma.

The School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, in collaboration with the NSS Cell of USTM, conducted a plantation drive at Savio Higher Secondary School in Baridua, Ri Bhoi, advocating for a greener, plastic-free future.

In celebration of World Environment Day 2025, the Departments of Computer Science and Physics jointly organised an outreach program titled “Green Earth, Clean Future: Sow the Seeds of Sustainability” on June 4, 2025, at Jorbil Village. Student volunteers distributed saplings to residents, encouraging active participation in tree planting and raising awareness about deforestation’s dangers and the importance of ecological balance.

The plantation-driven endeavour united faculty, staff, and workers in a spirit of unity, reaffirming their commitment to environmental conservation.

Additionally, the Department of Chemistry at USTM celebrated the day with an awareness program on “Embracing a Plastic-Free Pledge for a Sustainable Environment,” educating village residents about the impact of plastic pollution and promoting sustainable practices.

From pollution to solution, USTM leads the way with trees, not plastic—planting saplings, not waste—and celebrating World Environment Day the right way.
