Shillong, Sept 9: Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong on Tuesday said while pressure groups checking documents of laborers is acceptable, any actions beyond that, such as threatening or torturing, are not allowed by law.
“Of course, I have seen a number of pressure groups sometimes they went to the site and check and ultimately found out they (migrant labourers) don’t possess the required documents. So it seems what they said please go and collect and bring the documents, I think that is okay. But if the pressure groups go beyond that by threatening or by torturing I think that law does not allowed,” Tynsong told reporters while responding to a query on the pressure group checking drive against illegal migrants.
Tynsong has stated that the government welcomes inter-state labourers coming into the state but emphasizes the importance of possessing required documents as per the law.
“The stand of the government is very clear. Whoever trying to check the documents of our friends may be the interstate labourers coming into our state, we welcome them but at the time they need to make sure they possess the required documents as laid down by the Act from time to time,” he added.
