Guwahati, August 30: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday announced that the historic Vrindabani Vastra, created by Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva, will be brought to Assam on loan from the British Museum for 18 months in 2027.

The Chief Minister said the rare textile masterpiece, which illustrates the Dasavatar of Lord Krishna along with episodes from his childhood, is currently preserved in museums across Europe.

“For many years we have been trying to bring back the textile, at least on loan, so that the people of Assam can witness it. Except for those who have visited London, none of us have had the chance to see it personally,” Sarma said.

He informed that the British Museum has agreed to lend the artifact provided Assam builds a museum with international environmental standards. The state government has already allotted land for the project, while JSW has assured construction support under its CSR initiative.

“By 2027, we will be able to bring back the Vrindabani Vastra from the British Museum, at least as a loan, so that people of Assam can see it and offer their devotion to Lord Krishna,” Sarma added.
