Tura, May 31: A severe water crisis at the Chokpot Alagre Community Health Centre (CHC) in South Garo Hills district has triggered public outrage after local civil society groups alleged that the health facility was found virtually deserted during a surprise visit on Saturday.
Members of several civil society organisations from the Chokpot area said they visited the CHC to assess its functioning but found no doctors, nurses or other medical staff present, raising concerns over the disruption of healthcare services in the region.

According to the groups, the prolonged shortage of water at the health centre has severely affected normal operations, with medical personnel allegedly staying away from duty due to the lack of basic amenities.
The organisations further alleged that the Medical Officer In-Charge of the CHC, Dr Winje Sangma, told them to arrange drinking water and water for essential facilities before healthcare services could function normally. The statement has drawn sharp criticism from local residents and civil society members, who questioned how a government health institution could continue operating without access to basic infrastructure.
The incident has sparked concern among villagers who rely on the CHC for primary healthcare services, with many patients reportedly being deprived of timely medical attention.

Civil society groups termed the situation “deeply alarming” and said essential healthcare services cannot be allowed to collapse because of administrative or infrastructural failures.
They have urged the Meghalaya government and the health department to immediately restore water supply to the facility and ensure regular functioning of the CHC without further delay. The groups have also demanded accountability from the authorities over the prolonged disruption and sought action against those responsible.

The incident has once again highlighted the fragile condition of healthcare infrastructure in rural areas of Meghalaya, particularly in remote regions where basic services continue to remain inadequate.
