Why India’s “Chicken’s Neck” corridor is more critical than ever before

India’s narrow “Chicken’s Neck” corridor, the Siliguri Corridor connecting the Northeast to the rest of the country, has once again become a focal point for strategic policy debates, following recent developments including land transfer for BSF infrastructure, highway handing-over and plans for subterranean rail routes in the sensitive region.

Guwahati, May 19: Although most Indians only knew of the Siliguri Corridor through school geography books, the Northeast had always considered it to be far more than just that.

Every single vehicle transporting fuel to Assam, every army contingent travelling to Arunachal Pradesh, and nearly every train that moves towards Tripura and major logistical channels to the Northeast, all pass through this very small section of Northern Bengal.

This corridor is just 20-22 kilometers wide at its thinnest point and squeezed between Nepal, Bangladesh, Bhutan and the militarily sensitive Chumbi Valley, located near China.

Its geography makes the “Chicken’s Neck” a sensitive strategic bottleneck and one of India’s most vulnerable strategic points.

The central government is now taking decisive steps to enhance its control over the region following concerns about increasing congestion, underdeveloped infrastructure and strategic vulnerabilities.

West Bengal has agreed to grant land for BSF establishments and border related infrastructure development, while various central agencies are developing strategic railway and highway plans for the area.

This newfound sense of urgency is representative of a wider shift in India’s understanding of the importance of this region.

Many defense strategists had repeatedly raised concerns for decades about the vulnerability of the Siliguri Corridor despite its immense military and economic significance. Such concerns have only increased substantially following the 2017 Doklam standoff with China.

At present, the corridor serves as the economic and logistic supply artery for over 45 million inhabitants of the Northeast. Highways, rail routes, communication networks, petroleum movements, and military supplies, all rely on this critically small piece of geography.

Despite this fact, many residents in Northern Bengal complain that the region had been neglected for decades.

Areas within the corridor still suffer from overcrowding, flooding, poor urban planning and insufficient transport infrastructure. Critics have claimed that successive Left Front and Trinamool governments failed to take the full potential and importance of this strategically sensitive area into account.

This narrative appears to be changing now.

The enhanced interest shown by the central government in the region with plans to improve redundant rail systems, build highways and border security, along with an increased focus on logistic infrastructure indicates that India is increasingly recognizing the Chicken’s Neck as not just a transit point but as a zone of national importance and long-term national security.

The rapid economic development within the Northeast region also contributes to this sense of urgency.

The growth in tourism, hydropower, digital infrastructure, trade and defense expansion have led to a more profound integration of the region with the rest of India during the last decade. An interruption in the movement through the corridor today would likely have a much greater impact than it ever would have had in the past.

This patch of land, which was once ignored and surrounded by tea gardens and border settlements, has emerged as a region that the entire nation is now closely monitoring.
