Guwahati, March 20: After three decades in the Congress, Pradyut Bordoloi on Friday visited the BJP’s state headquarters at Vajpayee Bhawan in Guwahati, describing his switch as a “difficult” and “painful” decision that underscores the emotional and political weight of his move.
The BJP has fielded Bordoloi from the high-profile Dispur constituency for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections.
“It has been a very, very difficult decision… quite a painful one. But I’m reassured by the warmth and welcome I have received here. I’m confident I will be able to merge with the BJP family seamlessly,” Bordoloi told reporters.
Projecting humility in his new role, the former Congressman said he was ready to adapt within the party. “I consider myself a good student. I will try to learn and become a good compatriot of the BJP,” he said.
Acknowledging initial hesitation, Bordoloi said stepping into a new political space naturally brings uncertainty. “There is a little fear, a little doubt, and a sense of humility… but I am moving forward,” he added.
On possible resentment among local BJP workers over his candidature, Bordoloi struck a conciliatory note, saying he would personally reach out to them. “It is natural if there is some resentment. I will go to them with folded hands and seek their guidance, support, and blessings,” he said.
On his family’s reaction, particularly his son’s differing views, Bordoloi said, “I respect his decision.”
Bordoloi’s entry into the BJP and his candidature from Dispur are expected to significantly alter the electoral dynamics in one of Assam’s most closely watched constituencies.
