Dibrugarh, Apr 4: The ICAR–National Research Centre on Yak (ICAR–NRC on Yak), Dirang, has launched a yak reintroduction programme in Mechuka block of Shi-Yomi district in Arunachal Pradesh, aiming to strengthen high-altitude livelihoods and promote eco-tourism.
The initiative, led by Director Mihir Sarkar, focuses on reviving traditional yak rearing practices while introducing scientific livestock management to support tribal communities in remote Himalayan regions.
Implemented in collaboration with the Jomlo Mongku Mithun Farmers Federation (JMMFF) and the state’s Animal Husbandry Department, the programme underscores a multi-stakeholder approach to sustainable livestock development.
As part of the intervention, six yaks—four females and two males—were distributed among selected tribal farmers to enhance income opportunities. Additionally, 45 farmers received training in scientific yak husbandry, along with input support, under the Scheduled Tribe Component (STC) scheme.
The programme was coordinated by Principal Scientist Vijay Paul, alongside JMMFF chairman Tadang Tamut and veterinary officer Dr Jumter Tali.
Officials said the initiative is expected to strengthen rural livelihoods, preserve indigenous cultural practices linked to yak rearing, and open up new avenues for eco-tourism in the frontier district.
