Shillong, June 8: In a gruesome case of negligence on the part of the Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Ltd (MePDCL), a nursery student had to get both of her arms amputated after getting electrocuted by a power transformer in Mawkohphet, South West Khasi Hills district.
Ibapynhun Iawphniaw, a nursery student, had to have both her arms amputated and is still receiving hospital treatment for other injuries incurred in the April 21 incident.
In a letter to the MePDCL chief engineer, the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), South West Khasi Hills District Unit, has demanded the Power Distribution Corporation Ltd to pay lifetime compensation to the little girl.
KSU South West Khasi Hills has blamed the MePDCL for negligence which had caused disability to the child as it had not put-up fencing around the power transformer, which is close to the school in the area. Due compensation, medical aid and life-time payment should be paid to the victim, the KSU letter read.
The KSU further demanded that the department should carry out an inspection to check the condition of the transformers, electric poles and work on replacements in the district and Mawsynram block to prevent such incidents.
