Aizawl, Dec 6: In a recent state election in Mizoram, Baryl Vanneihsangi, a renowned radio jockey with a substantial following on Instagram, achieved a significant milestone by becoming the youngest Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA). She emerged victorious, making a notable shift in political dynamics as the younger generation makes its mark in Mizoram’s political landscape.
Vanneihsangi, 32-year-old of Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), won from Aizawl South-III constituency by 1,414 votes.
After the counting of votes on December 4, ZPM, Mizoram’s newest party of the state, won the election by winning 27 of 40 seats, defeating the incumbent Mizo National Front (MNF).
It must be noted that Baryl Vanneihsangi is one out of the three women elected to the Mizoram assembly.
She is also very popular on Instagram with over 252k followers.
Vanneihsangi’s Shillong connection
Vanneihsangi’s connection to Shillong is rooted in her academic journey, having completed her Masters in Arts from the North Eastern Hill University. Prior to her recent victory as the youngest MLA in Mizoram, she has also served as a corporator in the Aizawl Municipal Corporation.
In the Mizoram election, a total of 174 candidates participated, with a notable gender disparity as only 16 of them were women. Further analysis reveals that two among these women contested in two constituencies each.
Voting for Mizoram Assembly election was held in one phase on November 7.
