Guwahati, Apr 30: A fast-track court has rejected the bail plea of accused Shyamkanu Mahanta in connection with the death of Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, keeping him in judicial custody.
The court turned down the plea after hearing arguments from the defence, citing serious concerns raised during proceedings. According to sources, the prosecution alleged that Mahanta had supplied alcohol to Garg despite being aware of his medical condition.
Questions were also raised over the lack of adequate medical care and security arrangements.
The court was further informed that Mahanta had allegedly fled to Malaysia following the incident, which weighed against granting him bail.

Earlier in the day, Mahanta’s wife, Anita Deka Mahanta, dismissed claims that a viral audio clip circulating on social media features her voice. She alleged that the clip was being used to defame her and said she has been facing sustained online abuse and death threats, including threats of acid and petrol attacks.
She added that a complaint was filed with the CID on October 6, 2025, and later transferred to Panbazar Police on October 9.
Reiterating her husband’s innocence, she claimed that even a Singapore court had ruled out foul play, calling the death accidental.
