Guwahati, Sept 21: The High Commission of India in Singapore has formally confirmed the death of Assam’s beloved singer and cultural icon, Zubeen Garg, who passed away on September 19, 2025, in Singapore.
According to official documents issued by Singapore authorities, Garg, aged 53, died due to drowning. The Republic of Singapore’s Certificate of Death (No. 893802D) states that the death occurred at Singapore General Hospital at 17:31 hours on September 19.
The High Commission of India registered the death under Form C (Serial No. 153/2025) and cleared the mortal remains for repatriation to India.

At the time of his death, Garg was staying at Hotel Pan Pacific, 7 Raffles Boulevard, Singapore. The official registration listed his profession as Musician/Tourist, with his passport details verified. The death was formally registered on September 20, 2025.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the state would wait for the post-mortem report, which is essential for the investigation. “I have asked my Chief Secretary to speak to Singapore authorities to obtain the report at the earliest,” he stated.
Sarma had earlier disclosed that multiple FIRs had been registered against event curator Shyamkanu Mahanta and Garg’s manager, Siddharth Sharma. The CID will conduct a probe into the case.

According to the Chief Minister, Singaporean authorities have already initiated their own investigation. “Since the incident occurred outside India, the criminal aspect will be dealt with under Singapore’s jurisdiction. However, if any conspiracy originating in Assam is uncovered, action will be taken here as well,” Sarma said.
He assured that the state government would ensure a fair and transparent inquiry. “The government will conduct an impartial investigation. If anyone wishes to come forward as a witness, we will extend full support and make all necessary arrangements to facilitate the process,” he added.

Earlier, Sarma had confirmed that Garg drowned after removing his life jacket while swimming off a yacht in Singapore. According to details shared by the Chief Minister, the singer had gone sailing with four team members and 11 Assamese youths.
The group stopped mid-sea for a swim, during which Garg initially wore a life jacket but later took it off to swim freely. “After some time, his body began to sink. The yacht crew jumped in and rescued him, administering CPR on the spot, but he could not be revived,” Sarma said.
