Shillong, Aug 13: The 134th Patriots’ Day, marking the supreme sacrifice of Manipuri martyrs during the Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891, was observed with solemnity at the Bangiya Sahitya Parishad Hall here today. The event was organised by the Manipuri Elders’ Consortium, Shillong (MECS), and attended by members of the Manipuri community along with invited guests.
Renowned journalist and Wayel Kati Editor, Ningonbam Hemanta Kumar, attended as Chief Guest, while social worker Anita Nongkhlaw was the Guest of Honour. The function was presided over by MECS President, Smt. Thounaojam Sanggaileima.
The programme opened with floral tributes to the martyrs, followed by cultural performances of patriotic songs and poems. A special felicitation ceremony honoured 31 students for their achievements in academics and extracurricular activities.
A discussion forum, Leipung Phamba, featured talks by invited speakers. MECS Advisor Shri Mangsatabam Iboyaima welcomed the gathering, while Founder President Shri Munish Ningthoujam delivered the keynote address, underscoring the historical importance of Patriots’ Day and the need to uphold its legacy.
In her address, Nongkhlaw praised the community’s commitment to preserving the memory of the 1891 heroes and stressed the importance of inter-community harmony, while also speaking on contemporary issues such as drug trafficking and substance abuse in Meghalaya.
Chief Guest Hemanta Kumar reflected on the enduring relevance of Patriots’ Day, urging the youth to draw inspiration from the martyrs’ courage and calling for peace and unity in Manipur.
The event concluded with a short play on Bir Tikendrajit, leaving attendees with a powerful reminder of the spirit of resistance and sacrifice that the day commemorates.
