Nagaland’s Pfutsero launches drive for safer workplaces, women’s dignity

Must read

Pfutsero, June 28: With more women entering retail, hospitality and office-based jobs in Phek district, local organisations in Pfutsero have launched a joint campaign to strengthen workplace safety and uphold women’s dignity.

The Pfutsero Town Business Association (PTBA), through its Internal Complaints Committee (ICC), in collaboration with the Pfutsero Town Mothers’ Association (PTMA), organised a seminar on “Together for Women’s Safety and Dignity” at Pioneer Complex, CBCC, on Saturday.

The seminar brought together business owners, working women, students and civil society members to discuss workplace safety, gender sensitivity and legal safeguards against sexual harassment in both public and professional spaces.

Speakers stressed the need for collective responsibility in creating safe work environments, particularly as women increasingly join the workforce in the town’s growing commercial sector.

Organisers highlighted the role of PTBA’s Internal Complaints Committee, constituted under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013, as an important grievance redressal mechanism.

They also reminded employers that every workplace with ten or more employees is legally required to constitute an Internal Complaints Committee and conduct regular awareness and sensitisation programmes.

Members of the Pfutsero Town Mothers’ Association underlined the community’s role in preventing harassment, saying that respect and safety begin at home and must extend to marketplaces, offices and educational institutions.

PTBA representatives urged shop owners and employers to adopt a zero-tolerance approach towards workplace harassment, ensure safe working conditions for women employees and prominently display details of the Internal Complaints Committee, as mandated by law.

The seminar also familiarised participants with provisions of the POSH Act, including the definition of workplace harassment, procedures for filing complaints, inquiry mechanisms and penalties for non-compliance. Speakers emphasised the importance of confidentiality and the need for time-bound disposal of complaints.

Pfutsero, one of Phek district’s key commercial centres, has witnessed a steady rise in women joining the workforce in recent years, prompting local organisations to prioritise preventive measures and legal awareness on workplace safety.

The initiative also aligns with broader efforts to strengthen small businesses and promote inclusive and compliant workplaces across Nagaland.

The programme concluded with a call for “shared vigilance”, urging businesses, families and institutions to work together to ensure that women can work and participate in public life with dignity and without fear.

Organisers said similar sensitisation drives would soon be carried out in market areas and educational institutions across the town.
