Agartala, May 23: In a coordinated operation, Tripura Police and the Border Security Force (BSF) on Thursday detained 16 Bangladeshi nationals from three different locations across the state for allegedly attempting to illegally cross the international border into Bangladesh.

According to official reports, nine individuals were apprehended for illegally entering Indian territory. “They have admitted to being Bangladeshi nationals. We have produced them before the court,” a police officer said. The detainees were identified as Santosh Mallick, Elona Mallick, Dipul Sarkar, Sajal Sarkar, Pari Pal, Ritwika Pal, and Ruma Pal. An investigation is currently underway.

In a separate incident, five more Bangladeshi nationals were detained by Tripura Police in the Madhupur area of Sepahijala district after reportedly entering India through an unauthorised border crossing.

“Acting on credible intelligence, the police launched an operation and apprehended five individuals near a village near the India-Bangladesh border. They were brought to the police station for questioning. A case has been registered, and they will be produced before the court,” said a police source.

All five are said to be members of the same family from Bangladesh’s Kurigram district. During initial interrogation, one of the detainees, Shahjala Khan, confessed that they had been assisted in crossing the border and were en route to Delhi. The group includes two women and three men: Manir Khan, Saheba Khatun, Shahjala Khan, Swadhin Khan, and Dulali Khatun.

In a third operation, two more suspected Bangladeshi nationals—Prantosh Chandra Sutradhar and Subha Das—were detained by Tripura Police in Belonia, located in the South Tripura district.

Authorities say illegal infiltration attempts have increased in recent months. “Tripura Police and BSF have jointly apprehended numerous Bangladeshi nationals attempting to enter India without valid documents. Most of them have been repatriated after completion of legal procedures,” an official said.

Officials attribute the rise in border crossings to the political instability in Bangladesh following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government last year. Many Bangladeshi nationals are believed to be using porous stretches of the border to sneak into Indian territory.
