2-Day international seminar on climate change begins at St. Edmund’s College

Shillong, Aug 18: The St. Edmund’s College in Shillong commenced a 2-day international seminar cum webinar centered around the theme ‘Climate Change: A local, national, and global agenda’ on Friday.

Metbah Lyngdoh, Chairman of the Meghalaya State Planning Board, addressed the inaugural session, emphasizing the critical nature of Climate Change and the imperative to comprehend underlying issues for effective solutions and mitigation strategies.

He stressed the pivotal role of the youth in combating climate change, expressing his belief in their potential to initiate actions with tangible results. Lyngdoh highlighted individual responsibility in environmental deterioration and called for active intervention to counter the climate crisis.

Dr. P. Sahoo, General Manager of the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD), Shillong, also addressed the gathering. He underscored the significance of continuous awareness about the adverse effects of changing climates and its relevance in tackling the ongoing climate crisis.

Sahoo highlighted NABARD’s efforts in addressing the climate crisis through dedicated activities and programs. He mentioned NABARD’s establishment of a dedicated Climate Change Fund in 2016-17 to support initiatives targeting climate change impacts, adaptation, and mitigation measures, along with promoting sustainable development.

Earlier, Dr. (Bro.) Simon Coelho, the Principal in-charge of St. Edmund’s College, Shillong, underscored the importance of conducting the seminar cum webinar in the college’s Centenary Year. He expressed hope that the awareness raised among young minds during the event would have a profound impact on the future.

Prof. Osmond M. Kharmawphlang, Head of the Department of Geography at St. Edmund’s College, Shillong, spoke about the seminar’s objective to address climate change challenges and create awareness, particularly among students. He emphasized the event’s potential to foster collaboration and unity among students, teachers, and researchers from diverse fields at the local, national, and international levels.
