Tura, July 9: The Meghalaya Boxing Association (MBA), in collaboration with the West Garo Hills Boxing Association, conducted district-level selection trials in P.A Sangma Stadium, Dakopgre Tura on Tuesday for the upcoming 39th National Games, which Meghalaya will host in 2027.

Over 25 young boxers from across the district participated in the trials, competing in various weight categories. The event is part of a state-wide effort to identify and groom boxing talent from all 12 districts of Meghalaya in preparation for the Games.
The selection process is being led by Head Coach Lari Kharpran, appointed by the MBA to oversee the state’s boxing preparations, alongside Assistant Coaches Jimy B Shadap and Dondor Marweiñ, who also serves as the MBA Secretary.
The MBA delegation also included President Cornelius Kharhunai, Joint Secretary Khraw Kharmawphlang and Executive Member Huebirth Marbaniang, all of whom were present to oversee the trials and encourage the participants.
Coach Kharpran remarked that while several boxers from West Garo Hills displayed strong physical potential, many still need to refine their technical abilities. “We focus primarily on technique and sparring performance these are the key criteria for selection,” he said.
One of the participants, a young female boxer, impressed the coaches with her enthusiasm and fighting spirit. However, she was unable to qualify for selection due to not meeting the minimum weight requirement, weighing in at 42 kg, below the 48 kg minimum for her category.
Following the trials, four to five standout boxers are expected to be shortlisted for advanced training camps in Shillong. These athletes will also receive exposure through competitions in neighbouring states such as Mizoram and other North East-level events to prepare for high-level national bouts.
The MBA plans to complete all district-level trials by the end of July.
Once selections are finalised, a full-fledged state-level training programme will begin, with the goal of fielding a competitive team in both men’s and women’s boxing events when the National Games return to Meghalaya in 2027.
