Tura, Oct 14: The 42nd State Meghalaya Table Tennis Championship officially commenced in Tura on Monday(Oct 14) at the Indoor Stadium in West Garo Hills.
The five-day event, which will run until October 18, is organised by the Tura Table Tennis Association under the aegis of the Meghalaya Table Tennis Association.

More than 100 participants from across the state — including Shillong, Nongstoin, Jowai, Baghmara, and the host city Tura — have gathered to compete in various categories.
However, the opening day saw the cancellation of the Veterans category due to a lack of participants.

The championship was inaugurated with a brief program, during which organisers and players observed a minute’s silence in memory of Chinovn G Momin, a player who tragically passed away while participating in a tournament in Baghmara earlier this year.
Speaking to Hub News, Sengre Sangma, Secretary of the Tura Table Tennis Association, said, “We are preparing to host the National Games, and this championship will help us identify probable athletes for national-level competitions. The best performers will be shortlisted for the table tennis event in the upcoming National Games.”
In addition, top-performing Under-19 players from this championship will be selected to represent Meghalaya at the National School Games to be held in Jammu and Kashmir in late November.

Winners and runners-up in each category will receive trophies, medals, and certificates in recognition of their performance.
This annual state-level event was hosted in Shillong last year and is being held in Tura for the 5th time, offering local players an opportunity to compete at a high level without travelling far.
