Shillong, Nov 4: The District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), East Khasi Hills, in collaboration with the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), Meghalaya, distributed Emergency Responder Kits (ERK) to trained Yuva Aapda Mitra volunteers under the Yuva Aapda Mitra Scheme (YAMS) at U Soso Tham Auditorium, Shillong, on Tuesday.
The event was graced by Lahkmen Rymbui, Minister In-charge of Revenue & Disaster Management and Education, as the Chief Guest, along with senior officials and dignitaries from various departments.
In her keynote address, R.M. Kurbah,Deputy Commissioner and Chairperson of DDMA, East Khasi Hills, emphasized the vital role of youth in strengthening disaster resilience and the need for community-driven preparedness initiatives.
Earlier, S. Warjri, Additional Deputy Commissioner and CEO of DDMA, East Khasi Hills, welcomed the gathering, followed by a documentary screening that highlighted the impact of the Yuva Aapda Mitra Scheme and the contributions of volunteers in disaster management.
The programme featured an experience-sharing session by volunteer Miss Kerda Khongwir and an address by Col. Deepak Nambair, Commanding Officer, 61 Bn Meghalaya NCC, who spoke on collaborative partnerships in disaster response.
M. War Nongbri, IAS, Commissioner & Secretary, Revenue and Disaster Management Department, lauded the volunteers’ commitment and underscored the importance of inter-agency coordination in mitigating disaster risks.
A live demonstration by the trained Aapda Mitra volunteers showcased their skills in handling emergency scenarios.
Addressing the gathering, Lahkmen Rymbui commended the dedication of the volunteers and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to building a culture of preparedness through capacity-building and youth engagement.
A total of 434 volunteers have been trained under the YAMS initiative in East Khasi Hills District, comprising:
- NCC: 191 volunteers
- NSS: 100 volunteers
- NYKS: 94 volunteers
- MBS&G: 49 volunteers

The distribution of Emergency Responder Kits marked the highlight of the event, equipping volunteers with essential tools to act swiftly during emergencies.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by K. Wanniang, District Disaster Management Officer, SDMA.
