Aizawl, Jan 3: In a swift response to the recent incursion by armed pro-democracy ethnic groups, all 151 Myanmarese soldiers who sought refuge in Mizoram on Friday after their camps were captured, have been repatriated. Officials confirmed that a Myanmar Air Force aircraft landed at Lengpui airport in Mizoram on Tuesday afternoon to facilitate the soldiers’ return.

“A Myanmar Air Force transport plane from Mandalay (Myanmar) landed at Lengpui airport and evacuated 151 Myanmar soldiers to Akyab in two sorties. Before the departure of the Myanmarese soldiers, the Indian authorities have completed all necessary formalities,” said a senior official.

During a intense gun battle, several Myanmar soldiers fleeing the conflict sustained critical injuries. Swiftly responding to the situation, Assam Rifles offered essential medical treatment to the injured soldiers, who are now under the care and custody of Assam Rifles at Parva in Lawngtlai.

Last week witnessed a resurgence of intense gun battles between the Myanmar Army and armed fighters in areas near the Indian border. The ongoing clashes have prompted a fresh influx of soldiers seeking refuge into Indian territory.

The initial wave of migration from Myanmar began in February 2021, following the seizure of power by the Military junta. Since then, more than 32,000 individuals, including women and children, have sought refuge in the northeastern state from Myanmar.

Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh recently stated that due to ongoing unrest in the neighboring country, approximately 6,000 people from Myanmar have sought shelter in his state in the recent past. The states of Mizoram and Manipur share unfenced borders of 518 km and 398 km with Myanmar, respectively.
