SHILLONG, DEC 14: In a significant enforcement drive, the East Jaintia Hills district administration has demolished seven out of eleven unauthorised coke plants, adhering to environmental norms and court orders.

In a video statement issued on Sunday, Deputy Commissioner of East Jaintia Hills District Shivansh Awasthi, has informed that joint team, comprising officials from the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board and Police Department, has successfully demolished 7 out of the 11 unauthorised coke plants, with the remaining 4 found to have been already demolished by their owners.

A total of 16 coke plants were identified as unauthorised, with 5 previously demolished.

Notices were issued to the remaining 11 plants in October 2025, seeking compliance with necessary permissions for regularisation.

“As no response was received, the joint team proceeded with the demolition drive on December 13, 2025,” Awasthi said.

The 16 coke plants have been set up without obtaining the necessary authorisations as per the norms and criteria as laid down by the government notification.

After yesterday’s demolition, all 11 coke plants that were unauthorised are now not in operation, confirmed the Deputy Commissioner.
