Sairang station gets first automobile rake, boosts Mizoram logistics

Must read

Guwahati, Dec 14: Sairang Railway Station marked a major milestone on Mizoram’s rail map by handling its first-ever direct inward automobile rake, carrying 119 Maruti cars from Changsari near Guwahati. The historic movement is expected to significantly improve vehicle availability in Aizawl, reduce dependence on long-distance road transport, and benefit the state’s automobile ecosystem—dealers, service providers and customers alike.

The development underscores the growing role of rail-based logistics in Mizoram’s economic expansion and reflects Indian Railways’ push to strengthen regional connectivity and inclusive growth.

The automobile rake moved on the Bairabi–Sairang railway line, a landmark infrastructure project carved through difficult terrain. Spanning 51.38 km and passing through 45 tunnels, the line is critical to Mizoram’s strategic and economic integration with the rest of the country.

The Bairabi–Sairang line was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 13, 2025, when he flagged off the Rajdhani Express between Aizawl (Sairang) and Delhi (Anand Vihar Terminal), the Mizoram Express between Aizawl (Sairang) and Guwahati, and an Express train connecting Aizawl (Sairang) with Kolkata—formally integrating Mizoram into India’s national rail network.

Passenger response to the new services has been strong, with occupancy levels exceeding capacity on all three routes: the Sairang–Anand Vihar Terminal Rajdhani Express at 147%, the Sairang–Guwahati Mizoram Express at 115%, and the Sairang–Kolkata Express at 139%. The trains are being widely used for their affordability, time savings and improved access to major cities, education hubs and medical facilities.

Freight operations began soon after the inauguration, with the first movement on September 14, 2025, carrying 21 cement wagons from Assam to Aizawl. Since then, the line has transported essential commodities including cement, construction materials, sand, stone chips and automobiles.

The route has also enabled outbound logistics. On September 19, 2025, the first parcel consignment from Sairang—Anthurium flowers—was dispatched to Anand Vihar Terminal via the Sairang–Anand Vihar Terminal Rajdhani Express. Between September 17 and December 12, 2025, a total of 17 freight and parcel rakes were handled.

With the arrival of the first automobile rake, the Bairabi–Sairang line is rapidly emerging as a reliable logistics corridor, lowering transport costs and supporting Mizoram’s infrastructure-led economic growth.
