Imphal, Dec 6: In a joint operation, approximately 8.6 acres of poppy fields in the flowering stage were destroyed in the Makuilongdi forest area under the Senapati police station in Manipur.

The operation was conducted by a coordinated team comprising the Senapati Forest Department, Executive Magistrate, and Senapati Police, led by the SDPO Senapati. This initiative is part of ongoing efforts to curb illegal poppy cultivation in the state.

Manipur Chief Minister N. Biren Singh lauded the team’s proactive measures, emphasizing the detrimental impact of such activities on both the environment and community stability. “The poppy plants, which were found to be in the initial stage of flowering, have been destroyed, and a case has been registered at Senapati Police Station for further investigation,” the Chief Minister stated on X (formerly Twitter).

Since launching its “War on Drugs” campaign in 2018, the Manipur government has eradicated 19,135.6 acres of illegal poppy plantations across 12 districts. The campaign, initiated a year after N. Biren Singh assumed office, aims to address drug-related issues and their connection to the state’s ongoing ethnic conflicts, including concerns about poppy cultivation by alleged Myanmar immigrants.

The latest operation underscores the state’s commitment to tackling the drug menace and protecting its ecological and social fabric.
