Tura, June 8: One of the last legal veterans of Garo Hills and the Tura Bar, Jugal Kishore Sharma is no more.

Late Jugal Sharma breathed his last in a hospital in Guwahati on Tuesday evening after a prolonged illness. He was 78.

Among the first few to be an MA. LLB in law, Late Jugal Sharma was a well-known lawyer whose legal views on the subjects of the law was something many looked up to during his decades of practice in the Tura district Court. Having practiced law in Garo Hills for over 50 long years, he was an expert in criminal law and was also the legal representative of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council for many years.

He guided the district council on many of its cases and today’s courts in Garo Hills have several young legal minds guided and groomed by Late Jugal Sharma.

The legal community of Garo Hills has been shocked by the news of his demise and recalled his immensely rich contribution to the legal profession.

Besides his profession, Late Jugal Sharma was also known for his enthusiasm for fitness and is fondly remembered for starting and encouraging brisk walking about sports lovers.

“Jugal Kishore Sharma, one of the brightest lights on the legal canvas of Meghalaya and Assam, left for the heavenly abode on the 8th of this month. As much as he was known for his legal acumen, he was a far greater human being in the actual world outside of the courtroom. He held several posts of eminence in Meghalaya, a few of them being the legal advisor of GHADC, legal advisor to the bishop of Tura, and many other institutions of social and legal importance. Words fall short to summarise a person whose stature was bigger than the words used to describe him. He will always live on inside us.. like the person who was always there beside you…no matter what. The candle is no more but the light shines ever brighter,” stated his family.
