Respite for tenants struggling to pay rent

Must read

Shillong, June 8: In a small respite to those harassed by landlords to pay-up rent at the beginning of every month especially during the corona pandemic, the East Khasi Hills (EKH) district administration has issued a directive that no landlord should forcefully evict any tenant during the current pandemic of COVID-19.

In a notification issued on Tuesday, Deputy Commissioner Isawanda Laloo said it has come to the notice of this office that there are instances of landlords threatening to evict tenants on account of their inability to pay rent.

“Hence, it is deemed fit to instruct that no landlord will forcefully evict any tenant who is unable to pay the required rent immediately, but will give proper concession and time for payment, so as not to cause difficulties to people during such a time,” she said.

Laloo said employers of household help/domestic workers who are not able to come to work on account of the lockdown are urged to continue to support their workers and not demand that they expose themselves unnecessarily, or deprive them of their wages.

Household help and domestic workers are encouraged to get vaccinated. Those without IDs can approach the Incident Commanders or Medical Officer through the local headman for government instructions in this regard.
