Guwahati, Feb 22 : Bhupen Kumar Borah is a veteran Assam politician who was associated with the Indian National Congress for more than three decades before recently stepping down from the party. Over the years, he emerged as one of the Congress’s key organisational faces in Assam and is best known for serving two consecutive terms as MLA from Bihpuria.
Borah represented the Bihpuria constituency in the Assam Legislative Assembly from 2006 to 2016, completing two terms. His tenure established him as a prominent political voice in Upper Assam.
From 2021 to 2024, he served as President of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), where he frequently spoke out on both state and national issues. Earlier, during the tenure of former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, Borah held responsibilities as a party spokesperson and Parliamentary Secretary in the Government of Assam.
His political journey began in student activism. He served as Vice-President of the North Lakhimpur College Students’ Union and later as General Secretary of the Postgraduate Students’ Union at Dibrugarh University. During his university years, he gained recognition as a strong student leader and was associated with the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), where he was a contemporary of Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
After 32 years in the Congress, Borah recently resigned from the party ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections. He cited differences within the party’s state leadership as a key reason for his departure. Borah alleged that MP Rakibul Hussain exercises significant control over party affairs in Assam, while state unit chief Gaurav Gogoi functions merely as a “figurehead.”
Hussain has not directly responded to the allegations but has indicated he will address them in due course.
Regarded as one of the Congress’s prominent leaders in Assam, Borah is known for accepting diverse organisational responsibilities over the years without dissent. His exit just before the elections marks a significant political development in the state’s evolving political landscape.
Describing his resignation as a turning point, he said, “It is not an easy decision, but it is one taken with conviction, clarity, and a renewed commitment to serve the people.”
