Guwahati, Feb 22: Imagine walking through a forest before you board your flight. That’s the experience awaiting passengers at the new integrated terminal of Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBIA), which begins commercial operations from today.

Designed to reflect Assam’s natural landscape and cultural identity, the terminal blends modern aviation infrastructure with immersive aesthetics, offering travellers a distinct sense of place even before takeoff.
The new terminal was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 20, 2025, marking a significant milestone in the state’s aviation expansion.

Announcing the commencement of operations, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote on X:
“The new Integrated Terminal at @GuwahatiAirport begins commercial operations from tomorrow. A short while ago, I shared a first-hand glimpse of what your experience here will be like. Proudly built by the hands of Assam and powered by the sons and daughters of our state, this gateway is ready to welcome the world.”

Airline major Akasa Air will be the first carrier to commence operations from the new terminal.
Spread across 1,40,000 square metres, the newly developed Terminal 2 is designed to handle approximately 13.1 million passengers annually. The terminal building has been constructed at a cost of ₹4,000 crore.
Officials said the total project outlay stands at ₹5,000 crore, with ₹1,000 crore earmarked specifically for developing Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facilities.
Named after Assam’s first Chief Minister, Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi, the airport serves as the primary air gateway to the Northeast and is expected to significantly enhance connectivity, passenger comfort, and operational capacity in the region.
