Ampati, July 10: Nearly seven decades after it first opened its doors, Kambakpara Government Lower Primary School in South West Garo Hills has finally got a modern school building, bringing to an end a long wait for the village and marking a significant boost to educational infrastructure in the area.
The new building, inaugurated on Friday by Mahendraganj MLA and Adviser to the Government of Meghalaya on Excise Sanjay A. Sangma, was hailed by villagers as the fulfilment of a long-standing dream for a school that has served generations of children since it was established as a venture institution in 1957.
The inauguration was attended by government officials, village elders, teachers, students and residents, many of whom had once studied at the school.
Welcoming the gathering, village leader Rev. I.A. Sangma recalled the school’s journey over the past 68 years, saying it had remained the cornerstone of primary education for Kambakpara and neighbouring villages despite infrastructure constraints. He thanked the MLA for helping realise the community’s long-cherished aspiration.
Addressing the function, Sanjay A. Sangma said the state government was making major investments in the education sector and was constructing nearly 2,000 new school and college buildings across Meghalaya this year to improve access to quality education.
He also announced that indoor stadiums and mini stadiums would be developed across the Mahendraganj constituency to promote sports and create more opportunities for young people.
Additional Deputy Commissioner and DRDA Project Director Raymond Zachary D. Shira said quality infrastructure was essential for creating a conducive learning environment, while In-charge Sub-Divisional School Education Officer Emphul Ch. Marak noted that modern school facilities would motivate students and improve teaching and learning outcomes.

The programme was chaired by Pastor Augustha R. Marak, while Head Teacher Salmendro A. Sangma delivered the vote of thanks, acknowledging the collective efforts of the government, local leaders and the community in making the project a reality.
For the residents of Kambakpara, the new building is more than just improved infrastructure—it is a symbol of the village’s enduring faith in education and a fresh beginning for generations of students who will now learn in a modern, better-equipped campus.
