Agartala, July 10: Flash floods triggered by days of incessant rain have affected nearly 11,000 people across three districts of Tripura, with more than 10,000 residents taking shelter in relief camps as authorities race to contain the crisis.

Officials said one person has died and the worst-hit districts are Unakoti, Dhalai and Khowai, where overflowing rivers inundated low-lying areas, damaging homes, crops and infrastructure.

According to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), 10,977 people have been evacuated to relief camps, including 6,068 people housed in 35 camps in Unakoti district, while 4,909 others are sheltering in camps in Dhalai and Khowai.

The floods have damaged 4,027 houses and submerged large stretches of agricultural land, standing crops and other properties across the affected districts.

The lone fatality was reported earlier this week when 23-year-old Subham Debnath drowned in the Juri River at Dharmanagar in North Tripura district.

“We don’t know what to do because the water rose rapidly and entered our house. We were shifted to a relief camp, where around 20 families have taken shelter,” a flood victim said.

Officials said the water level of the Manun River has started receding following a brief improvement in the weather, while the Howrah River flowing through Agartala remained below the warning level on Friday. Authorities, however, continue round-the-clock monitoring of river levels.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall until July 12, warning of localised flooding, waterlogging, disruption of road traffic and possible landslides in hilly areas.

The state administration has advised people living in vulnerable areas to remain alert and avoid rivers and other water bodies unless absolutely necessary.
