After Modi, Amit Shah to visit Assam, inaugurate key projects ahead of Assembly Polls

Must read

Guwahati, Dec 28 : Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit that set the political tone in Assam, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to arrive in Guwahati on Sunday night for a two-day visit marked by high-profile inaugurations and political outreach ahead of the Assembly elections.

According to sources, Shah will stay overnight at the state guest house in Koinadhara. On Monday morning, he will pay homage to the martyrs of the Assam Movement against infiltration at the newly constructed Swahid Smarak Kshetra in Guwahati.

From there, the Home Minister will travel to Batadrava Than, the birthplace of Vaishnav saint Srimanta Sankardeva in Nagaon district, where he will inaugurate the redevelopment project of the revered spiritual site.

Later in the day, Shah is expected to return to Guwahati to inaugurate the new building of the Guwahati Police Commissionerate along with an Integrated Command and Control System (ICCS), aimed at strengthening the city’s security and emergency response capabilities.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the ICCS will enable real-time monitoring of more than 2,000 CCTV cameras across Guwahati, significantly enhancing policing and disaster response mechanisms.

Taking to X, Sarma wrote:

“A major boost to Guwahati’s safety. On 29th December, Adarniya @AmitShah ji is set to inaugurate Guwahati’s new Police Commissionerate and an Integrated Command and Control Centre, which will monitor over 2,000 CCTVs to bolster security and emergency response systems.”

Shah’s visit assumes political significance as it comes barely months before the Assam Assembly polls. It will be his first visit to the state in the run-up to the elections, and is seen as part of the BJP’s broader strategy to energise party workers and consolidate organisational strength on the ground.

With just about three months left for the polls, the BJP has stepped up the frequency of visits by senior leaders to Assam.

Party leaders say the back-to-back visits by Modi and Shah underline the importance the BJP attaches to Assam, where the NDA has been in power since 2016.

Referring earlier to the redevelopment of Batadrava Than, Chief Minister Sarma had said the site, once affected by encroachment, now stands as “a shining example of what steely resolve can achieve in protecting Assam’s cultural and spiritual heritage.”

Shah’s itinerary—combining security infrastructure, cultural heritage and political messaging—signals a push by the BJP to set the narrative ahead of the Assembly elections.
