Guwahati, Nov 10: In a proud moment for Mizoram, Aizawl has been conferred the Special Award for Efficient Traffic Management System at the 18th Urban Mobility India (UMI) Conference and Exhibition 2025, held in Gurugram, Haryana on Nov 9. The recognition celebrates the capital city’s innovative approach to managing urban mobility challenges in one of India’s most geographically complex urban settings.
Mizoram’s traffic management includes unique, localized practices like the “Pete Pete” honk for polite overtaking and city-specific initiatives like the “No Vehicle Zone” in Aizawl for festive events. The state also has standard traffic management structures, such as the Department of Transport, registered RTO offices, and the implementation of national road safety rules.
Organized by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), the three-day national conference brought together over 1,600 delegates from eight countries, including experts, policymakers, and industry leaders, to deliberate on the future of sustainable and inclusive urban transport.
Aizawl’s recognition came under the category of “Special Award for Efficient Traffic Management System,” presented to the Town & Country Planning Department, Mizoram, for its efforts in adopting smart, localized strategies to ease congestion, improve road discipline, and enhance commuter experience despite the city’s steep terrain and limited road space.
Mizoram government has brought out a State Road Safety Policy, which will bring about a significant reduction in mortality and morbidity resulting from road accidents based on the following principles:
A political commitment, across all Departments concerned, to deal with road accidents.
A broad strategy, involving education, engineering, enforcement and emergency to deal with accidents.
A clear vision and numerical targets for reductions in the different categories of accidents.
A concrete plan with specific measures for implementation and enforcement.
Institutional co-ordination within and between different levels of government and with private sectors.

At the valedictory ceremony, Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs and Power S Manohar Lal lauded the participating states and cities for their commitment to shaping the future of India’s urban mobility landscape. He emphasized that Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities must begin integrated mobility planning today to ensure they are “future-ready” as they grow into larger urban centers.
The Minister also launched the logo and website of the PM e-Bus Sewa Scheme, aimed at accelerating clean and inclusive public transport across Indian cities. He announced that the 19th edition of the Urban Mobility India Conference will be hosted in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, from October 23 to 25, 2026.
Other major awardees included Chennai (Best Public Transport System), Udaipur (Best Non-Motorized Transport System), Hyderabad (Best Green Transport Initiative), and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (Best Passenger Services).
The event, attended by dignitaries including Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, Union Minister of State Tokhan Sahu, and MoHUA Secretary Srinivas Katikithala, concluded with discussions on expanding the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) beyond Delhi-NCR and introducing premium compartments in metro systems to make public transport more inclusive and financially sustainable.
