Guwahati, July 23: Three northeastern states — Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Manipur — have sounded security alerts and stepped up vigil along their inter-state boundaries in response to Assam’s ongoing eviction drive against illegal immigrants.

In separate advisories issued on July 23, the states expressed concern that evicted individuals from Assam may attempt to cross into their territories, prompting instructions for heightened border surveillance.
Nagaland’s Commissioner’s office, in an advisory from Kohima, directed all Deputy Commissioners to take “proactive measures” to prevent any influx, calling it crucial to safeguard the state’s demographic integrity and law and order.
Meghalaya’s Home (Political) Department echoed similar concerns and instructed district authorities to maintain strict vigilance. Its order stressed that any such influx must be kept “in check” to preserve peace.
Manipur, which shares an international border with Myanmar, went a step further — raising concerns over both cross-border migration and potential spillover from Assam. The state’s Home Department issued a detailed memorandum directing officials to strengthen mechanisms to block illegal entry, and to collect biographic and biometric data of any migrants detected. It also ordered the formation of district-level task forces and regular reviews of exit-entry monitoring systems.
All three states called for close coordination between police, district officials, and in some cases, paramilitary forces, to manage any fallout from Assam’s crackdown.
