Ampati, June 17: In a major step towards promoting disability inclusion and empowerment, the first-ever Purple Fair for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs) in the Garo Hills region will be held at the MFC Hall in Ampati, South West Garo Hills, on June 18.

The event is being organised by the Composite Regional Centre for Skill Development, Rehabilitation and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (CRCSRE), Shillong, under the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, in collaboration with the district administration and the Office of the District Social Welfare Officer, South West Garo Hills.

The fair is aimed at raising awareness about disability rights, facilitating access to government schemes and services, and creating opportunities for the social and economic empowerment of persons with disabilities.

A major attraction of the event will be exhibition stalls showcasing products, handicrafts, artworks and innovations by persons with disabilities, self-help groups, non-governmental organisations and institutions working in the disability sector. Organisers said the initiative seeks to encourage entrepreneurship, self-reliance and livelihood opportunities among PwDs.

The programme will also feature cultural performances, including music, dance and other artistic presentations by persons with disabilities, highlighting their talents and promoting greater inclusion in society.

Officials said the fair would provide an important platform for interaction among stakeholders involved in disability welfare and rehabilitation, while also enabling organisations to showcase their services, initiatives and success stories.

Tura MP Saleng A. Sangma will attend the event as the chief guest. MLAs Subir Marak, Sanjay M. Sangma, Ian Botham K. Sangma and Miani D. Shira are expected to participate as special guests.
Organisers have invited persons with disabilities, NGOs, self-help groups, government departments and members of the public to take part in the event and contribute towards building a more inclusive and accessible society.

They expressed confidence that the Purple Fair would serve as a catalyst for strengthening disability inclusion and empowerment across the Garo Hills region and Meghalaya.
