Dibrugarh, Feb 1: Honchun Ngandam, MLA and Advisor to the Minister for PWD, has appealed to the Wancho community in the Tirap, Changlang and Longding (TCL) region to gradually move away from the traditional practice of jhum (shifting) cultivation and adopt sustainable farming methods.

Addressing the public, Ngandam emphasised the need for a phased transition to modern, eco-friendly agricultural practices to promote environmental conservation and ensure long-term economic stability. He said the Arunachal Pradesh government, under Chief Minister Pema Khandu, is committed to supporting the community through viable and sustainable alternatives.

Ngandam noted that the state’s Agriculture and Horticulture departments are strengthening schemes focused on high-value crops such as tea, ginger and tamul (betel nut). These permanent cultivation systems, he said, are intended to replace the soil-depleting cycles of shifting cultivation while offering farmers more stable and dependable income opportunities.

Calling for the adoption of modern farming techniques that protect Arunachal Pradesh’s rich biodiversity, Ngandam also urged air gun users to refrain from hunting wildlife. He stressed that safeguarding the region’s fauna is as critical as preserving its flora, warning that the ecological health of the TCL region depends on an immediate end to poaching.

By moving away from traditional hunting and jhum cultivation towards conservation-led livelihoods, Ngandam said the Wancho community could play a leading role in Arunachal Pradesh’s green transition.
