SHILLONG, OCT 15: The Achik State Peoples’ Front (ASPF) has filed a complaint with the Director General of Police (DGP) I Nongrang against the alleged harassment and extortion of Meghalaya commuters by Assam Police personnel at the Kukurkata Outpost and along the Damra Dudhnoi Road.
In a letter submitted on Tuesday, the ASPF alleged that vehicles bearing Meghalaya registration are routinely stopped without valid reason. It said that commuters are subjected to intimidation, threats, and undue questioning even when complete vehicle papers are produced. Officers reportedly demand money directly from drivers, and refusal often results in prolonged harassment, threats of seizure, or unnecessary delays.
“Such actions not only inconvenience commuters but also strain relations between citizens of the two neighbouring states.”

The ASPF has requested the DGP to take up this matter formally with the Assam Police headquarters to ensure immediate cessation of such unlawful practices.
It also suggested the need to establish a joint monitoring mechanism between Meghalaya Police and Assam Police to safeguard commuters’ rights besides consider joint patrolling or set up designated complaint channels for travelers facing harassment along this stretch.
