Assam: 354 players to participate in All India Sub-Junior Ranking Badminton Tournament in Dibrugarh from Oct 25

Dibrugarh, Oct 24: Dibrugarh is all set to host the Yonex-Sunrise All India Sub-Junior Ranking Badminton Tournament 2024 (for Under-13 Boys and Girls), featuring 354 promising young players from 26 states across the country.

The tournament, scheduled from October 25 to 30, will be held at the Multipurpose Indoor Stadium.

The prestigious event, carrying a prize of Rs 3 lakh, is being organised by the Dibrugarh District Sports Association (DDSA) under the aegis of the Assam Badminton Association and the Badminton Association of India.

The tournament has drawn participation from across India, including remote regions like the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and all northeastern states. The event will be held in four different categories – Boys Singles, Girls Singles, Boys Doubles and Girls Doubles.

The states participating in the tournament include Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Gujarat, Haryana, Jharkhand, Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Andhra Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Odisha, Punjab, Puducherry and Bihar.

“This tournament marks a historic moment for Dibrugarh as we step onto the national badminton stage. It’s an unprecedented opportunity for young talent to compete at such a high level in our region,” said Rituparna Baruah, Chairman of the Assam Tourism Development Corporation (ATDC) and President of the Organising Committee during a press meet on Thursday.

He informed that Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will inaugurate the tournament on October 25 at 4.30pm, accompanied by MPs Rameswar Teli and Pradan Baruah.

Speaking about the historical significance of the tournament, DDSA President Kamakhya Saikia said, “Since the establishment of the DDSA in 1918, this is the first time we’re organising a national-level badminton tournament in Dibrugarh. It’s a proud moment for our association.”

The tournament’s technical aspects will be overseen by Chief Referee Binoy Joshi from Maharashtra and Match Controller Norem Roben from Manipur to ensure adherence to international standards.

DDSA General Secretary Niranjan Saikia expressed confidence in the event’s success. He said, “We’ve made comprehensive arrangements to ensure this tournament sets a benchmark for future sporting events in the region. This platform will help identify and nurture emerging badminton talent from across the country.”
