Itanagar, July 19: Frustrated by years of official inaction, residents of Chinvan village in Arunachal Pradesh’s Longding district on Sunday repaired a dilapidated Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) road on their own, exposing the poor condition of rural connectivity in the area.

Braving inclement weather, youths from the village joined hands with local residents in a daylong voluntary drive to repair the road linking Pongchau Lower Village. They also cleared clogged roadside drains to improve drainage and restore motorable access.

Villagers said the road was constructed in 2014 under the PMGSY with the promise of providing all-weather connectivity. However, they alleged that years of poor maintenance have left the road in a severely damaged condition, making travel increasingly difficult, especially during the monsoon.

According to the villagers, repeated representations to the authorities seeking repairs yielded no results, forcing the community to take up the restoration work themselves.

The latest community-led repair drive has once again highlighted the challenges of maintaining rural road infrastructure in remote parts of Arunachal Pradesh, where residents often step in to restore roads after prolonged official neglect.
