Boko, April 25: The Special Task Force (STF) of Assam intercepted a group of couriers at Amingaon and seized a large consignment of heroin.
The contraband weighed 837 grams excluding soap box covers, and its estimated street value is Rs 7 crore.
The four persons taken into custody include the alleged leader and three women identified as Lam Neikim, 25, daughter of Meangminthang, of Zouveng, Churachandpur (Manipur); Hoineigah, 24, daughter of Mangkhogin, of Tuibong, Churachandpur (Manipur); and Kim Neithen, 36, daughter of Thang Goulul, resident of Lanva, Churachandpur.
A fourth woman, Ngah Pi, 30, wife of Sesen Gangte, of Lamka, was also detained in connection with the seizure
The operation, led by Kalyan Kumar Pathak, Addl SP, STF, was launched after intelligence indicated that a gang of female couriers, allegedly directed by a notorious narcotics runner from Manipur, would deliver drugs to Amingaon for onward transmission to lower Assam districts.
STF sources said the suspected leader was identified as Demthang Haokip (36) of Tuibong, Churachandpur (Manipur). Based on the input, the courier and three women were intercepted at Amingaon, where officers recovered sixty two (62) soap boxes/packets of heroin from their possession.
Necessary legal measures are being taken, the STF said, as investigations continue to trace the supply chain and any wider network involved in the trafficking.
The agency added that further arrests and recoveries cannot be ruled out as inquiries progress.
