Dibrugarh, Apr 24: Waris Punjab De chief and Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh was sent back to Dibrugarh Central Jail on Saturday after completing a two-day police remand, even as legal proceedings against him gathered pace following the end of his three-year detention under the National Security Act.
Singh had been re-arrested by Punjab Police immediately after the expiry of his NSA detention, a move that has kept him in custody amid multiple ongoing cases.
On Friday, he was produced before a local court in Dibrugarh via video-conferencing in connection with a case linked to the recovery of unauthorised electronic devices from the high-security NSA cell of the Dibrugarh Central Jail in February 2024.
The hearing was conducted before Judicial Magistrate First Class Chandan Saikia, with Singh appearing from Dibrugarh Police Station under heavy security arrangements. The case has drawn attention due to concerns over security breaches inside a facility meant to house high-risk detainees under stringent surveillance.
Nine of Singh’s associates, who were earlier lodged in Dibrugarh alongside him but later transferred to jails in Punjab, were also produced through video-conferencing from facilities in Goindwal, Bathinda and Patiala. Investigators are examining possible lapses that allowed access to unauthorised communication devices within the restricted NSA ward, raising questions about internal oversight and coordination between agencies.
Officials have remained tight-lipped on specific findings so far, but sources indicate that the probe is focusing on how such devices entered a highly monitored zone and whether there was any external facilitation involved.
With Singh’s legal situation evolving after the lapse of the NSA detention, and fresh cases now taking centre stage, the focus has shifted to how the investigation unfolds in the coming days, both inside Assam and in Punjab, where parallel legal developments are expected.
