Dibrugarh, Apr 25: In a major step to boost milk production in Longding district of Arunachal Pradesh, the Department of Animal Husbandry, Veterinary and Dairy Development (AHV&DD) on Friday handed over 20 cattle — including 19 pregnant cows and one breeding bull — to local dairy cooperative societies in Senua village.
The village was selected after multiple rounds of surveys conducted by department officials.
Senua, located near Longding town, is known for its experienced cattle rearers. Notably, the villagers do not consume beef, making the area suitable for dairy development.
The cattle were procured from Sahiwal in Punjab. In a remarkable development, ten calves were born during transit from Sahiwal to Senua, as well as during the quarantine period, bringing added enthusiasm among villagers.
To ensure proper care and nutrition, concentrate feed support has also been provided.
This initiative marks the first introduction of the high-yielding and climate-resilient Sahiwal breed in the district, aimed at enhancing milk production and improving farmers’ incomes.
In addition, a pilot initiative involving the distribution of 15 units of Merino cross sheep has been launched in the Pongchau area to promote diversified livestock farming.
The programme is being led by Arunachal Pradesh Animal Husbandry, Veterinary and Dairy Development Minister Gabriel D. Wangsu, who assured villagers that the government is committed to further strengthening dairy development in the region, citing the state’s immense potential.
The event was attended by MLA Thangwang Wangham, along with senior officials from AHV&DD and NDDB, PRI members, and district administration representatives.
