Assam: 50-year-old man trampled to death in Goalpara

Guwahati, Jan 29: A 50-year-old man was trampled to death by wild elephant in Assam’s Goalpara district on Friday evening.

The deceased has been identified as Lopendra Rabha of Lakhipur area of Goalpara.

According to locals, the body of Lopendra Rabha was recovered from Saibari Halbagan area of Lakhipur.

“The wild elephants have been creating a reign of terror in the Lakhipur area for the last several days. We have informed forest officials about the elephant depredation in our village but they didn’t do anything to drive out the elephants from the village area,” alleged a villager.

He added, “The heard of wild elephants enter the village in search of food every day and create a reign of terror by destroying the crops.”

Recently, on January 2, two persons were trampled to death and six others injured by a herd of wild elephants near Numaligarh in Golaghat district of Assam.

Meanwhile, Assam government has increased compensation for human deaths due to elephant attacks from Rs. 1 lakh to Rs. 4 lakh.
