Tinsukia, Nov 3: An active Ulfa(I) cadre laid down his arms before Tinsukia police on Thursday.

The surrendered Ulfa(I) cadre has been identified as Palash Moran alias Gopal Asom.

Palash Moran voluntarily gave up his arms and decided to return into mainstream by shunning violence.

Moran hails from Nalni village in the Pengeri area of upper Assam Tinsukia district.

Tinsukia Additional Superintendent of Police, Bibhas Das, played a pivotal role in facilitating the surrender.

Over the years, the government’s rehabilitation and reintegration programs have successfully encouraged many individuals to return to civilian life.

Recently, many Ulfa(I) were surrendered and return to mainstream to lead a good life.

“We are in touch with many Ulfa(I) cadres who want to return back. We have decided to help them in their return to lead a good life,” said a police source.

Recently, a Ulfa(I) cadre reportedly been executed for attempting to flee their camp in Myanmar.

“There is growing disillusionment among the rank and file of the Ulfa-I. Even their leaders are now realising the futility of the arms struggle, which they have been carrying on since the last 44 years. Today’s surrender is the result of that. Several senior Ulfa-I leaders and cadres have returned to the mainstream,” said a police source.

He further said, “It is true that most of the Ulfa-I cadres based in Myanmar are frustrated and disillusioned. They have realised that the dream of an independent Assam can never happen”.
