Assam Assembly polls: Tension builds across camps ahead of results

Must read

GUWAHATI, May 3: A day before the results of the Assam Assembly elections are set to be declared, both ruling and opposition camps are on edge, with leaders expressing confidence publicly even as uncertainty looms.

Senior leaders across parties said they remain optimistic about winning their respective seats, but acknowledged that several constituencies are likely to witness close contests.

Opposition leaders have dismissed exit poll predictions, asserting that the alliance is poised to form the next government in the state. On the other hand, the Bharatiya Janata Party is confident of returning to power for a third consecutive term under Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

Despite the public confidence, there is palpable tension in both camps ahead of the counting day.

“It’s natural—everyone contests to win. In several seats, we can expect tight fights, especially between Congress and BJP candidates,” a political expert said.

Counting of votes for all 126 Assembly constituencies will take place at 40 centres across the state’s 35 districts under tight security arrangements.

Assam Chief Secretary Ravi Kota has directed district administrations to ensure foolproof security, continuous monitoring of strong rooms and strict adherence to counting protocols.

Authorities have issued detailed post-poll instructions, including mandatory inspections of counting centres, deployment of adequate police and paramilitary forces, enforcement of a dry day, and restrictions on victory processions to prevent clashes. Officials have also been asked to closely monitor any potential law and order issues and ensure a peaceful post-result environment.

Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) carrying the fate of 722 candidates will be transported from strong rooms to counting halls under multi-layered security cover.

According to officials, 25 companies of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) have been deployed to guard counting centres and strong rooms, with additional state police and special security units on standby.

Polling in the state was held on April 9, recording a turnout of 85.96 per cent among over 2.5 crore eligible voters, indicating strong public participation.

Several high-profile candidates are in the fray, including Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi, Leader of Opposition Debabrata Saikia, Badruddin Ajmal, and Akhil Gogoi.

With results just hours away, all eyes are on whether the BJP retains power or the opposition manages an upset in what is expected to be a closely watched electoral contest.
