Guwahati, Jan 19: Assam has become the first state from the Northeast to participate in the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual General Meeting 2026, being held in Davos, Switzerland, from January 19 to 23.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, who is part of the Indian delegation, departed for Davos on Saturday to represent the state at the global economic summit.
Founded in 1971 by economist Klaus Schwab, the World Economic Forum is an international organisation for public-private cooperation. Best known for its annual meeting in Davos, the WEF brings together global political leaders, business executives, policymakers, academics, and civil society representatives to discuss key global challenges such as economic growth, climate change, technology, and geopolitics.
Announcing his departure on X, Sarma wrote, “Past midnight—will shortly board the flight to Zurich to represent Assam at @Davos 2026. Assam’s aspirations are getting new wings every day, and I look forward to meaningful discussions and agreements to strengthen our growth journey over the next few days.”

According to officials, the WEF AGM will formally open on Sunday evening with an opening concert, followed by a welcome reception and a Global Lighthouse Network dinner.
On the second day, the Chief Minister is scheduled to attend a Semiconductor, Electronics and AI Roundtable lunch hosted by the Tata Group, followed by meetings with the Adani Group and the exchange of memoranda of understanding (MoUs). Engagements with global entities led by the Tata Group are among the key highlights of the day.
The third day will feature a multilateral meeting between the Government of India delegation and the President and CEO of the World Economic Forum.
On the fourth day, Sarma will meet the JSW Group, followed by the signing of MoUs, and hold a bilateral meeting with AB InBev. Other engagements include a roundtable with the Brunswick Group, meetings and MoUs with Kesar Petro Products Ltd and Actual Systems Inc, and participation in a session on travel and tourism titled “The $10 trillion blind spot.”
The fifth day will include meetings with the Rashmi Group, Schneider Electric, Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), and the Essar Group, along with MoU exchanges and interactions with potential investors.
The Chief Minister is expected to use the Davos platform to highlight Assam’s governance reforms, industrial expansion, and emphasis on technology-driven and inclusive development.
Significantly, the Centre has allowed Assam to represent India at the WEF alongside other leading states—an opportunity traditionally extended to more industrially advanced regions—signalling growing national confidence in Assam’s economic trajectory.
During the five-day summit, Sarma will engage with leading industrialists, global CEOs, economists, and heads of major international institutions, including the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and the World Trade Organisation.
