Guwahati, Jan 19: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Sunday said that 14 Bangladeshi nationals were apprehended and pushed back from the state following a coordinated security operation.
In a post on X, Sarma said, “You may be hiding in plain sight, but we will hunt you down and expel you from India. This mission continues as we pushed back 14 illegal infiltrators in the wee hours today — some fresh entrants and some experienced troublemakers. Committed to a secure Assam.”

The Chief Minister asserted that safeguarding Assam’s demographic balance, social harmony, and internal security remains a top priority of his government.
The pushback comes amid intensified border surveillance, with Assam Police and security agencies stepping up operations to detect and prevent illegal cross-border movement. In recent weeks, several Bangladeshi nationals have been apprehended while attempting to enter Assam and subsequently pushed back across the border.
Earlier, Sarma had stated that his government would not wait for a formal repatriation treaty between India and Bangladesh to act against what he termed “illegal immigrants,” and that a new policy framework was being implemented to accelerate such operations.
Expressing confidence ahead of the Assembly elections, the Chief Minister said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would return to power for a third consecutive term and continue its agenda of development alongside the protection of indigenous interests.
Sarma further said the state aims to evict between 10,000 and 15,000 foreigners annually from 2026. He also pointed out that the Assam Accord of 1985 does not clearly outline procedures for deportation after detection. “Those declared foreigners were earlier kept in detention centres but often managed to secure bail and walk free,” he added.
