Tokyo, July 30: India has been assured of a second medal at Tokyo Olympics after pugilist Lovlina Borgohain on Friday defeated Nien-Chin 4-1 in the quarter-final bout in the 69 kg Welterweight category.
With this win, Assam boxer Lovlina has entered the semi-finals.
The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) tweeted: “CREATES HISTORY @LovlinaBorgohai puts up a brilliant performance and secures 1st medal for Flag of India from boxing in 69 kg at @Tokyo2020. She beat Chinese Taipei’s Chen NC 4-1 in QF to reach semis”.
In her earlier match, Lovlina defeated Germany’s 35-year-old Nadine Apetz in the pre-quarters 3-2.
Lovlina, 23, is the first woman from Assam to qualify for Olympics.
On July 22, Lovlina Borgohain made it through to the pre-quarters of Tokyo Olympics due to the withdrawal of her opponent from the mega event.
In March 2020, Borgohain booked her spot in the Olympics by beating Uzbekistan’s Maftunakhon Melieva in the quarterfinals of the Asian Olympic qualifiers.
With this, she became the first ever sportswoman from Assam to qualify for the Olympics.
