Assam: Coal miner Pranjal Moran’s body retrieved from underground mine at Tirap Colliery

Guwahati, April 7: After three months, Assam police on Friday retrieved the body of coal miner Pranjal Moran from an underground mine at Tirap Colliery in eastern Assam Tinsukia district.

Pranjal Moran was missing since January 6, 2023 from Tirap Colliery.

Recently, a search operation was launched under the supervision of Assam police IGP Jitmal Doley to find out the body of coal miner Pranjal Moran.

Finally, after the massive search operation the body of Pranjal Moran was retrieved inside the underground mine at Tirap Colliery.

Meanwhile, SDRF, NDRF and police conducted a massive search operation at the site but due to bad weather the search team faced lots of problems. JCB had to be used to find his body.

Confirming the development, Assam Police IGP Jitmal Doley said, “We have recovered the body of Pranjal Moran from an underground mine at Tirap Colliery on Friday morning. His body was recovered from 100 metres away from the underground mining site. We have faced problems in our search operation due to bad weather but finally we have retrieved his body. With the assistance from Coal India Limited (CIL), we conducted the search operation.”

Yet again, it has been confirmed that rat hole mining has been operational in Margherita, Ledo area. The coal mafias are operating the whole nexus with the help of the local political leaders.

According to reports, Pranjal Moran, a resident of Hukoni village of Makum in Tinsukia district, was working at Tirap Colliery as a daily wage worker who went missing in January.

Meanwhile, Police have arrested 13 persons in connection with the incident. All of them were involved in illegal procurement of coal from the rat hole mine in Tirap.

Police also arrested two persons who disposed of the body of Pranjal Moran, identified as Rupsai Kujur and Sujan Pahariya alias Babu Pahariya.

Moran had supposedly left home on January 6 to work in a coal mining project at Ledo in Tinsukia.

As per Pranjal’s wife, her husband went missing on February 1. She was informed the very next day by the coal trader that Moran had died in an accident while working inside the mine and that his body could not be recovered.

On February 4, Pranjal’s wife lodged an FIR with Ledo police station. However, she alleged that the police did not take any action regarding her complaint.

Recently, Assam DGP GP Singh ordered the DIG (NER) for a proper investigation into the alleged ‘missing’ case of Pranjal Moran, and asked the perpetrator be booked within 7 days.The DGP issued the dictate after Pranjal Moran’s wife visited him at his office to complain against her husband’s mysterious disappearance and request the Assam Police to recover her husband’s body.
