Guwahati, May 25: In a significant development, the Assam Director General of Police (DGP) GP Singh on Saturday ordered the withdrawal of the suspension orders of Inspector in Charge (IC) of Khelmati Outpost Dipankar Changmai and one-duty sentry Constable Bhairab Deori and Home Guard Anil Bora in the custodial death case of a detainee in Khelmati police outpost in Lakhimpur.
Taking to X (formerly Twitter), GP Singh said, ” “Reference recent North Lakhimpur incident of death in police custody – Preliminary PM reports are indicative of death due to pre-existing coronary disease. District SP has been directed to withdraw suspension orders of the policemen including IC. However, detailed enquiry and mandatory follow up would continue.”
The DGP said that according to the post-mortem report of the deceased Arshad Ali (42), he died because of “pre-existing coronary disease.”
According to police, Arshad fell ill inside the police outpost and was taken to Lakhimpur Medical College and Hospital, where he was declared “brought dead”.
Referring to the stone pelting by a mob at Khelmati Out Post in North Lakhimpur district on May 23rd, 2024, DGP informed that fifteen persons had been arrested based on the evidence collected, including CCTV foot.
They have been identified as Jahangir Ali, Md. Malek Ali, Md. Monirul Islam, Md. Sahjahan Alom, Md. Soni Ahmed, Md. Papu Khan, Md. Mubarak Ali, Md. Mojibur Rahman, Md. Ajijur Rahman, Md. Kashem Ali, Md. Baharul Islam, Anarul @ Anar Islam, Syed Mafujur Rahman & two minors.
The police official said materials preparatory to arson were also recovered and seized during the searches. Appropriate lawful action will be taken.
