Guwahati, July 14: Assam’s flood situation deteriorated on Tuesday, with the death toll rising to four as the first wave of monsoon floods continued to affect several parts of the state.

More than 37,000 people have been affected across six districts, with officials warning that the situation could worsen if heavy rainfall continues in neighbouring Arunachal Pradesh, from where several rivers flow into Assam.

According to official reports, the latest fatality was reported from the Chariduar Revenue Circle in Sonitpur district. The victim had gone missing on Monday night, and the body was recovered on Tuesday.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the floods have affected 37,032 people, with Lakhimpur emerging as the worst-hit district, accounting for 35,696 affected residents.

The deluge has impacted six districts—Sonitpur, Dibrugarh, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Jorhat and Sivasagar—submerging 99 villages across 12 revenue circles.

Relief operations are underway, with the administration distributing essential supplies through 20 relief distribution centres.

Over the past 24 hours, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) rescued 16 people from flood-hit areas of Sonitpur district.

The floods have also taken a heavy toll on agriculture and livestock. ASDMA said 1,103.94 hectares of agricultural land have been inundated. Two animals were washed away, while 16,139 livestock and poultry have been affected by the floods.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as continued rainfall in the upper catchment areas threatens to aggravate flooding in downstream districts.
